PROMOTING CHILD RIGHTS

The movement for the promotion of child’s rights began in 1924, when the United Nations League adopted the Child Rights Declaration elaborated by Eglantyne Jebb, the founder of Save the Children movement in UK. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was ratified by the Romanian Parliament in September 1990. According to article 11 from the Romanian Constitution, it is part of internal law. In order to be respected and put into practice, the Convention must be known by children, parents, teachers, specialists and authorities.

Save the Children organizes training courses, debate groups, workshops in schools and high schools, contests and children’s fora.

The workshops are carried out both as a distinct activity and during the civic education classes. They are developed differentially, on age groups, according to the topics and the methodology from the Educational Files. In the General Secretariat and in the Save the Children branches, 300 young volunteers organize workshops and debate groups on child rights in 165 school units: 110 elementary schools, 17 high schools, 17 placement centers and 21 kindergartens and children’s clubs, involving 6.200 pupils and teachers.

Every year the Child Rights Contest is organized, at the level of classes, schools and counties. The national phase of the contest takes place during the children’s annual meeting “Child’s Right to Expression and Creativity”. 6000 pupils participate annually in this contest.

Between the 1st and 7th of June, the children’s right to opinion and participation is stimulated by organizing exhibitions, contests and shows during the Child’s Right Week.
