How Save the Children gets involved

Assistance:
Education activities

Preschool children
• Payment of the daily food allowance for refugee children enrolled in kindergarten.
• Providing the necessary school supplies for refugee children enrolled in kindergarten.
• Organizing an educational and recreational program for refugee and asylum-seeking children of preschool age in Stolnicul Centre.

School aged children:
• Counselling for refugee children and their families
• Providing the necessary school supplies for children enrolled in school
• Supplementary tuition for the children integrated in the Romanian educational system.
• Monitoring and helping doing the homework for the children accommodated in Stolnicul Centre
• Seminars for refugee and separated teenagers.
• Actions and activities to prevent child trafficking.

Recreational Activities

Children's Rooms from Stolnicul Centre
• Painting lessons, handicrafts and practical abilities workshops.
• Computer lessons.
• Recreational games and sport activities
• Watch cartoons and films, reading stories.


Diversity Club

• Classes of modern, traditional and folk dance.
• English lesson.
• Painting course.
• Classes for practical abilities and making of traditional objects.

The purpose of the Diversity Club is to promote the friendship between the Romanian and refugee teenagers through the agency of culture, customs and traditions. The teachers from these workshops are the refugee children who are willing to share some of their culture and traditions to other children.
Any child interested by this club is expected to subscribe to the Diversity Club!

Other Activities:
• Summer camps and trips.
• Visits to museums, theatres.
• Sessions on different themes (violence prevention, fashion, discrimination).
• Organizing exhibitions.
• Organizing different artistic moments and participation on different shows, organizing special events to celebrate the Child's Day, the International Refugee Day, Christmas, Ramadan, New Year's Eve, etc.

The number of beneficiary in 2006 was 63 refugee children and 37 parents


The children received support in school integration, their school attendance is being monitored and the parents benefit from counselling regarding the participation of their children to school.
In 2006, Save the Children continued to be the implementation partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and continued to collaborate with other organizations from the refugee and asylum-seeking assistance field.
