On a national level, there isn't a unitary system of gathering data related to trafficking in human beings. The institutions give different statistics, according to their responsabilities in fighting trafficking or assisting its victims.
Situation in 2006
The distribution of the identified victims in 2006 by the specialized structures of law enforcement (according to DGCCO and IGPF, 2007)
In 2006, the law enforcement identified 2285 victims of traffic, of which 1 699 were female and 586 male, of which 43 boys and 274 girls were younger than 18 years old.
Regarding the type of exploitation, from the 2 285 victims identified by law enforcement, 63,50% were victims of trafficking in human beings for sexual purposes; 27,31% for labour, 8.01% for begging purposes and 1.18% victims of other types of trafficking.
Transition centers
During the period 2004 - 2006, the transition centers assisted a number of 661children victims of national and international trafficking. The most frequent destination countries for trafficking were: France, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, England, Portugal, Norway.
