Starting with 1990, the birth rate registered a decreasing tendency, from 16‰ in 1989 to 9.7‰ in 2002. The legalization of abortions and the poor socio-economic situation of a large number of families are factors that contributed to the development of the family model based on maximum 2 children, although, the birth rate registered a slow ascending tendency in the last years, reaching 10.2‰ in 2005.
The highest value of the birth rate - 11.7‰ on average - is specific for the North-East counties, with a value of 12.6‰ in Iasi county, 12.4‰ in Suceava and 12.1‰ in Vaslui.
The lowest birth rate is specific for the South-West region (Oltenia), where the average value is 8.9‰ and Olt county reaches only 8.5‰. Low values are registered in counties from other regions also. Therefore, in Teleorman county, the birth rate measures 7.9‰, in Hunedoara 8.7‰ and in Mehedinti 8.8‰. In Bucharest the birth rate's value is 9.7‰.
